Gilliam Family Running Trail
The Gilliam's have built a running trail at their house that is 800 meters long. That's right at half a mile, but if you're not used to trail running you'll agree it feels much longer. Matt, Helen and Hunter cut it out so it's a pretty wide track for a running trail through the woods and they have cleared out any overhanging branches. They've also removed sticks, limbs and logs from the trail and mowed it down to the dirt. It's a pretty soft surface and the trail only has one hill (around the 500-600 meter marks).
They have posted routed signs every 100 meters and plan to keep working on the trail to make the surface more smooth and to beautify the trail (planting flowers and shrubs at strategic points, removing fallen wood within site of the trail). Eventually, it would be nice for it to be surfaced with stone dust. It would also be cool to build a campsite, gazebo and a couple of benches on the trail. Some mulch along the sides would also be a neat addition as would some little statues at each place the trail enters the woods.
Matt would like to invite the running club members over three or four times per year for a run and perhaps a picnic afterwards.
Matt would also like to have the Orange County High School Cross Country Team over for a preseason intra-squad scrimmage and picnic in August. Due to the toughness of the course it could be something like the annual Hornet 3200 meter race (2 laps, + a mile on the road and a little craziness mixed in).
The Gilliam's are real proud of it and will be honored and excited if anyone wants to drop by to run it.
